I’ve always realized that I needed to get serious about my level of physical fitness. I had always “talked” about exercising more and even dabbled in various DVD programs – nothing stuck and quite frankly, I hated to exercise. It was a chore and I often times found excuses to do something else.
However, in the spring of 2012, it became different, I had reached a point in my life where my medical health wasn’t the greatest, layer in my age and my family medical history, I was slowly increasing my risk of establishing lifelong medical issues. That scared me. It was then that I started my journey.
The first thing I had to do was to look myself in the mirror. I needed to stop talking about it, stop being interested in fitness and get committed. Getting committed was a huge step. I also realized I couldn’t do it on my own; it would have been easy to find excuses again. I needed discipline, I needed coaching and I needed support.
It was then that I found the One on One Fitness Consultant team. From day 1, each member of the One on One team has cared for me personally. They want me to succeed and are dedicated to my journey, partnering with me to establish, modify, and enhance my goals every step of the way. I started to do things, both physically and mentally, that I never thought possible. I actually started to enjoy exercising. I was proud of my accomplishments and couldn’t wait to get home and tell my family about the awesome workout I had. My trainers made exercising fun!
Then, this past January, after 9 months of training, I could tell I was stronger, that I had more energy, that I truly was committed to becoming physically fit, yet, I was puzzled that I couldn’t “see” the results. After all, I was exercising consistently and working out harder than I ever had in my life.
I decided to look in the mirror again. I realized I was missing a piece of the puzzle. I needed to commit to not only being physically fit, but nutritionally fit as well. You can’t have one without the other and be truly healthy.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. One on One had just rolled out the Nutrition Challenge and shared their Key Nutritional Strategies. I was ready.
I took a hard look at everything I was eating and then how much of it. Although the majority of food I was eating was healthy, I was eating way too much of it. I was out of control with calorie intake and I didn’t know it.
So, I made some dramatic changes:
- I measure everything for the proper portion sizes and I fill up on water – I drink at least 96 oz. a day.
- I have virtually eliminated all processed carbs. I get most all of my carbs from fruits and vegetables. If I do have processed carbs, they are whole grain and only on a rare occasion – it’s become a special treat.
- I journal everything I eat and drink to assess if I’ve been good/bad and if need to adjust.
- If I know I am going to be traveling or somewhere where I may not have control over what food is available – I will pack snacks that I know will work for me. In fact, on our most recent vacation – we packed the cooler and the camping stove and made all our meals.
- Lastly – I have my coaches & motivator’s. My family and friends know what I’m striving to achieve and hold me accountable.
Today, I play (aka: workout) at least 5 days a week. I watch what I eat and drink; I make calculated decisions and healthier choices. Starting with a commitment was one of the greatest gifts I gave myself. Joining One on One was another. I am LOVING and LIVING life!
I can’t begin to thank my family at home and the one I have at One on One, for all that they have done for me. I am truly blessed. You will always be part of my journey.
